What is a Sound Bath?

A sound bath is a meditative experience where individuals are immersed in a sequence of calming sounds produced by instruments such as singing bowls, chimes, rain sticks, gongs and more to promote deep relaxation in the mind and body. The orchestrated soundscape initiates a soothing sensation that washes over the participants. This is how “sound baths” got their name!

How Does it Work?

During a sound bath, there are frequencies and vibrations that are produced by the instruments. These frequencies entrain with the body’s natural frequency and begin to deactivate the sympathetic nervous system, which controls the “fight, flight, or flee” response in the brain. The parasympathetic nervous system, which governs rest and relaxation in the body is then activated. The brainwaves then drop to alpha (relaxation) theta (dream-state), and sometimes delta (deep sleep) wave lengths.

Sound baths also activate the vagus nerve, which is the longest cranial nerve in the body. The vagus nerve starts in the brain and ends in the large intestine. It carries out signals for involuntary functions in the body such as breathing, heart-rate, digestion, blood pressure, and immune responses. If the vagus nerve is out of balance, it can lead to health issues like anxiety, depression, digestive problems, headaches, and even heart conditions.
